Thoughts on transportation from Roma airport to Sorrento 4 adults & 2 teenagers.

Train or car service,. or other thoughts.

Car service is terrific but it can be very expensive depending on your concept of price. The train works well but involves a transfer at Termini and at Naples to the Circumvesuvianna. Makes for a long day after an international flight. A better choice would be to extend your ticket to include the flight to Naples and from there a private driver. There is also a bus from Rome to Sorrento a couple of times a day but don't think your flight matches up with the bus schedule.

The Search box here will reveal many previous discussions of the topic. An issue specific to you is that six people and their luggage won't fit in a sedan, so you'd have to pay extra for .. probably ... a van. Train is a three-seat ride from FCO. Is that acceptable to you? Are you willing to buy non-changeable, advance low price tickets for Rome/Termini-Naples? Time of year makes a difference, especially for crowding. Sorrento books up six months in advance.

Car from Naples to Sorrento is a luxury. Car from Rome to Sorrento is (to me) a boring pain. Have you thought about the departure from Sorrento? Many people don't allow enough time and get stuck with an early flight to the USA.

Where are you going?

Your other post says you are landing in Milan and going to CT?

I don't know if it's possible for you but if I had the time I would take the train to tiburtina train station, spend the night and take the bus to Sorrento the next day. It's the Marozzi bus and takes around 3 1/2 hrs. I've taken this bus both ways, it's very pleasant and relaxing, no worries, luggage is stored under bus.

I think trains are your best option, assuming your flight is scheduled to arrive before 2PM or so. With 6 people + luggage, you'd need a van. Sorrento is quite far from Rome, some 270km apart.

Avoid bus options altogether.

If you are flying from Milan to Rome you may be landing at Ciampino airport which is the much closer airport to Rome. Just saying Roma airport doesn't specify. There is no train from the airport at Ciampino.

If I am in your position, with two able-bodied teens, and you are arriving Rome Fiumicino early in the day, I'd consider taking the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini train station and buy tickets onsite (instead of in advance) one-way to Naples Centrale station. This way if the plane's late into Rome, you're still fine. That Rome-Naples run departs every 30-45 minutes, so you shouldn't have to wait that long.

From there, you either have the (pricier) choice of a private van to your Sorrento hotel--ask your hotelier for advice--or take the Circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento station. As I've said before, this option is only viable if your hotel is within walking distance of the station. If it's down by the marina, you might as well take the private van.

Enjoy your planning!

I have to strongly disagree about not taking the bus unless your thinking of the regular Intercity type which this is not. We will again be using this bus in June with our family of 7. We totally enjoy the ride seeing the country side. Much easier then taking a train to Naples then changing trains

The problem with the Marozzi bus is that it has limited runs; only once or twice a day. It can work if everything else on the schedule works but the OP may not have an interest, say, in spending the night in Rome on arrival day if they can't make the last or only bus.

It would help to have more info on this trip (what does the complete itinerary look like?), and it is confusing that one post says they're flying into Milan and then going to the CT for 10 days, but another says they're flying into Rome (which airport?) and going to Sorrento.

The last leg of your trip from Rome to Sorrento will be tiring given that you will have just landed after an overnight flight. I suggest staying near the Termini train station in Rome on your arrival day, and continuing on to Sorrento the next day. You could book inexpensive train tickets in advance to cover the trip from Rome to Naples.

Obviously a private transfer that takes you directly from the airport to your hotel in Sorrento is the most relaxing and hassle free option not having to wrangle luggage on and off the train, however the choice also depends on the available budget.
The cost for 6 train tickets from Fiumicino Airport to Naples Centrale by using Leonardo Express plus Frecciarossa is about 260/360 Euros, depending on how long before you buy the ticket, from Naples Centrale to Sorrento by private transfer is about 100 Euros, so 360/460 Euros in total. A direct private transfer from Fiumicino Airport to Sorrento costs about 500 Euros.

We booked a private car service for 4 and it was a wonderful, hassle free experience, well worth the cost as we got some great advice along the way.

I do this every year - but granted, I'm travelling alone. My flight from Philadelphia arrives fairly early in the morning. Taxi or train to Roma Termini is easy. Just as easy is the Freccia train to Napoli Centrale - you can buy tickets at a discount a few weeks before your trip (just give yourself some wiggle room in case your flight is delayed). From Napoli Centrale I really like taking the boat across the bay to Sorrento. For me it's relaxing, far better sights, takes less time than the train. The difficulty is that their schedule is meager so it takes some careful planning. But, hey! planning can be a fun part of the trip if you let it! Enjoy Sorrento - it is a favorite of mine.

It would be good to hear from the OP at this point as it would be helpful to have answers to some outstanding questions. Are they flying into Milan or Rome? What time of year is this trip? What time of day is flight arrival? What matters most, price or convenience?

And the post above says it's 6 people but an earlier post says 7. Which is it?

I wouldn't count on much dialogue, Kathy.

The OP has been asked questions in the other posts and has never returned to any of their questions.

The OP is a man of few words as you can see. His OP consists of 7 words. Perhaps that is his allotment for the week which is why he wonโ€™t add details.
