Thoughts on itinerary

We are flying in to Venice on a Thur. We already have three nights set there. Our original idea was to spend two days in Florence then on to Rome for four days before we fly out of Rome. (The flights and reservations in Venice won’t change.) Our issue is that many places are closed on Sun and Monday in Florence. We were thinking of going directly to Rome for six nights with a couple of day trips thrown in. The trips will have to be by train or bus.
Does anyone have any suggestions regarding doable day trips from Rome or a possible different itinerary after Venice?

Thanks
Lisa

Lisa, there are plenty of places open in Florence on Sunday and Monday.

The Uffizi, Accademia and Pitti Palace are open on Sunday

The Duomo complex is open every day but Tuesday:

The Bargello is open 7 days a week:

And there's more. It's OK if you'd rather skip it and go directly to Rome but I wouldn't do that just because you think a lot will be closed as that's not the case. The only possible caveat would be if your dates fall on the first Sunday of the month when National Museums are free: not a time to try and do the Accademia and Uffizi as they'll be mobbed. Same for the Colosseum in Rome.

If you decide to keep Florence in the mix, I would pre-order tickets for the Uffizi and Accademia, and climbing the duomo's dome requires a reservation in addition to a ticket: see the website linked above.

I agree with Kathy. Lots of sights open on Sunday and Monday, just be sure the ones you want are open.

Thank you for your replies! I’ve put Florence back on the table. A lot will depend on what time we can get a train from Venice.
Thanks again.

You shouldn't have any trouble. There are direct trains every hour or so from about 7:25 in the morning, and they take a little over 2 hours from Venezia S. Lucia to Firenze S.M. Novella.
