Thoughts on Gaeta?

Hello Fellow Travelers!

I haven't been to Italy in decades (my husband never), and though we're planning to hit the big cities, I'm wondering about going to Gaeta. (vs. say, the more crowded Capri and/or Sorrento?). Has anyone been? Would 2 nights be excessive if we're planning a two-week trip (Rome, Florence, Venice)
Thanks so much for responding!

It might be a good, low key spot for you to relax, although July and August will be crowded on the beach. Another nice option is Sperlonga.

Not as picturesque as Capri or Sorrento but defiantly less crowded. It has several beaches but the Serpo beach has the most facilities. It has a nice old town, and of you enjoy hiking, Split Mountain has some nice walks/hikes with stupendous views. We've visited twice, once in early May and and also early September.

To reach it from Rome, will require both train (to Formia-Gaeta station and a short 10 minute bus ride into town).
As Laurel pointed out, Sperlunga is a very good option. Very Greek in appearance. The beach is also beautiful. I believe Sperlunga also is a train/bus combo but check. We drove.

Thanks! This would be in late September. And, should’ve mentioned prior, I have a knee replacement, and hills are a bit challenging. So if Gaeta is hilly, perhaps not?

Transport would be the train to Formia, & then either bus or taxi to Gaeta

Yes, train to Formia-Gaeta and the bus actually in this rare instance meets the train. I can't remember if we saw any taxis except in town.

My family and I just completed a trip in Naples and Rome. We started in Gaeta on a whim and it was the highlight of our trip. The people there are so wonderful and the food is incredible. We cannot wait to again!
