Thoughts for three days outside of Rome

Hello!
We are heading over to Rome in September, aiming to arrive early on Saturday or Sunday morning. We are leaving on a cruise out of Citivecchia on the following Friday.

Looking to head elsewhere from Sat/Sun - Wednesday, heading back to Rome on Wednesday AM to spend a couple days before heading out on the cruise. (We have been to Rome twice before and have seen the majors, but have a few more sites we want to see and to just wander). Friends we are traveling with are suggesting to head to Orvieto. Maybe stay at an Agriturismo for a couple days and explore from there….thoughts on how this sounds, or suggestions of somewhere else to go to that is nearby for a couple days outside of Rome. Or do some day trips by train from Rome? Or, just savor Rome???

Thoughts/suggestions appreciated!

I like Orvieto a lot. The historic area up on the hill is very attractive, and the town has actual sights to see, unlike some small hilltowns/villages. With a car I'm sure there are worthwhile options elsewhere in the area. I've always been dependent on public transportation.

In addition to some international tourists (it's not undiscovered), I had the impression Orvieto was a popular getaway destination for Romans. It may be less busy if you avoid the weekends (no guarantees).

Seconding Orvieto. We were there a week or so ago and it was a welcome respite after a couple weeks in the Rome hustle and bustle. We had a spectacular view of the green valley and several excellent meals. Evenings, we had the Duomo square all to ourselves as we enjoyed gelato and/or a glass of wine. Extra: decided I needed a haircut and for nine euros got one of the best cuts in recent memory.
