Discouraging to see Germany, Austria, and other countries descending into another massive wave of infections. Italy seems to have higher vaccination and more protections still in place... but what are you thinking about end of the year travel there?
Well, I’m already in Italy, but we are booked to spend Christmas in Rome and can’t wait. I’ve been told over and over how magical it is during that time. Infection rates are climbing but not spiking. Boosters are available and the rates of vaccinations for children are looking good. The news is saying that the government will do almost anything to avoid another Christmas lockdown.
It’s a very personal choice and requires flexibility in case things change at the last minute. Right now, it looks ok. Absolutely zero guarantees of course.
I’ll just add that if you choose to go you really want to book a flight direct from the US (assuming that’s where you are coming from) to Italy. I’ve gone pre-covid with layovers in another country (Germany once, UK a few times, Canada too). While transit through airports has been permitted during some prior lockdowns…you just never know what either countries rule will be right now. Plus you don’t want to get stuck in a closed country if flights are cancelled. Go straight to Italy if you determine it is a good time to visit.
