Thinking of staying 3-4 days in Positano.

We are thinking of staying 3 or 4 days in Positano on the Amalfi coast on our next trip. I'm wondering what others think of this town? What would be the best way to get there from the airport in Rome? What are some of the best places that folks have stayed and eaten at?We just really like the looks of this town instead of staying in the more touristy town of Sorrento. Thanks everyone Ron...

Getting to Positano is a bit complicated - Train to Naples, switch to the commuter Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and then catch a SITA bus to Positano. And then walk to your hotel. So pack light. I recommend the Hotel Pupetto in Positano. It's on its own beach about a five-minute walk from the central beach/harbor in Positano. It has rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean and a great restaurant. It has a secret elevator to a parking lot somewhere above the town. We just used the pathway along the sea.

It is a beautiful small hillside village w/ incredible mediterranean views.. No cars are allowed except to drop off luggage /supplies. You can take ferry or buses to nrby towns to visit(a must) . Many stay in luxury hotels in the lap of luxury (rich n famous are common here) So it is on the expensive side for lodging. It is considered to be a honeymoon location. If that suits you def stay there if not there are many less costly options in Sorrento and just visit Positano for the day.

Sorry to say, but Positano is just as touristy as Sorrento, if not more so. Sorrento is larger and more spread out so the tourists aren't as concentrated like they are in Positano. We love staying in Sorrento - it's a beautiful town, very charming. And transportation to get to all the wonderful places to visit is super easy from Sorrento - Positano, not so much.

Thanks for the replys. We are now thinking of splitting our stay between Sorrento and Positano. Any suggestions on where to stay in Sorrento ? This is our 2nd trip to Italy and we are so looking forward to it. We just fell in love with the country. We stayed in Rome, Venice, and the CT on our 1st trip. We are thinking of doing Florence, CT & Sorrento / Positano on this trip. Ron...

You can get to Positano more directly by taking the train from Rome to Salerno, then a ferry or hydrofoil from Salerno to Positano. We stayed at the Hotel Punta Regina in Positano and it was fantastic. From Positano you can easily take day trips to Capri, Amalfi, and/or Ravello. Ravello is a don't-miss.

We've stayed at La Tonnarella in Sorrento 3 times and really like it. It's an easy walk to/from town on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples. They have a great restaurant w/outdoor dining in good weather, an excellent buffet breakfast, a private beach which we really enjoyed, and amazing views. I recommend a room with a balcony.

We stayed at Villa La Tartana right next to Cathedral. Paid about 250 euros a night for a "suite" that had queen sized bed, two twins, sleep on couch and crib for baby so we think it was a great deal for 4 adults and baby with breakfast included. Very clean, extremely helpful staff. When you leave to catch the bus (assume you stay there but probably works at any hotel) they will call a golf cart and transport luggage to the top of the town where you catch the bus. It only cost 20 euro plus tip and it was well worth it as we had seven pieces of luggage. You can check out this b&b or others on website, b&b's in positano. It is a long trip to get there from Rome, I think about 4 hours the way we went from Rome airport. Subway to train station, train to Naples, train to Sorrento and then bus to Positano but it was easy to handle. We enjoyed it better than Sorrento but am sure you will have people who feel the opposite. Anyway, enjoy your trip.
