Thinking about doing a day trip from Assisi?

Thinking of doing a day trip during our stay in Assisi. We will not have a car.

Looked at Orvieto and from what I saw that's a 2 1/2 hour train ride?

Cortona looks like a 1 hour train ride. Is Cortona a good place to visit?

All other ideas for destinations will be appreciated.

Yes, Cortona is a very good place to visit. Be aware there is a very steep uphill climb to the town on top. Perhaps you can get a taxi up.
Across from Assisi, visible, is beautiful Spello. There is train service but I am sure if connects with Assisi. Perhaps a bus would. Spello has views, history and lots of good dining choices. Near Spello are two towns worth a visit, Bevagna and Montefalco. We had a car so not sure about public transportation.

I was just in that neighborhood in January of this year, day tripping from Perugia. We stopped in both Spello and Assisi. The train trip between the two is only about 15 minutes. The walk from the Spello train station to the bottom gate of the walled old town is an easy 10" stroll. The lunch we had at the restaurant Il Pinturicchio in Spello was one of the best meals of our two-week trip (and very reasonably priced!) Do call ahead - even if it's just couple of hours ahead - for a reservation. When you arrive in Assisi, you'll likely want to take a taxi from the train station (which is "down on the plain") up to the walled city. To get back to the train station, without luggage, you could take either a taxi, or a shuttle bus. The buses are easily found in Piazza Unita d'Italia, down at the "bottom" of the old town, below the Basilica. Buy your ticket from the tobacco/souvenir shop in the Piazza.

The best way to get between Assisi and wonderful Spello is the bus. That avoids the particularly long trek to the train station in Assisi. And the bus stop is pretty much just outside the gates into Spello, again, not nearly as far as the train. Umbria Mobilita has the schedule. Spoleto (on the train line) is another possibility for you.

Janet,
Where do we access the bus that will bring us to Spello? We are staying in Assisi, by the Cathedral.
Thanks.
