One of the things you overlook is holidays when booking your travel. We are going to be in Rome 4/29 to 5/4. Unfortunately May Day is in the middle of the trip. Many places are normally closed on Monday & now many are closed on Tuesday also. We have a tour of the Vatican on Wednesday. Any suggestions of places or things to do that Tuesday?

We were there on May Day a couple of years ago and took the opportunity to visit a whole lot of churches that are full of art, mosaics, wonderful Cosmati tile floors---and that are beautiful, sometimes ancient, buildings themselves. It turned out to be one of our best days. We sat in the back of one church and observed a family wedding and at another church watched all the very stylish guests arrive for another wedding.
