Things to do near Paestum, Italy

My husband and I are planning to spend a week at a b &b in Paestum at the end of August and into early September. We will visit Pompeii, Sorrento, Naples and Capri (these are all within 2 hrs of Paestum). We'll also travel to Matera (Basilicata region)and Bari (Puglia region). Can anyone recommend tours, wineries, restaurants, etc nears Paestum, Matera, Bari?

Salerno is an easy train ride from Paestum. I really liked Salerno - a mini Naples - loud and noisy with interesting streets to wander. Pontecagnano is very close to Salerno and has a very interesting Etruscan museum (this is off the beaten path of tourists). I found it very interesting. Matera was fabulous - we spent several nights there in the sassi. Just ate at the restaurants that we found down in that area. Some very interesting museums to see also and paths to walk on. We also went to Alberobello and Locorotondo where we spend several more nights.

Thanks, Linda for these suggestions.I had also found a Buffalo mozzarella farm at some point between Paestum and Matera. We're thinking about a stop there.

There's an interesting but low-budget WWII-related museum in Eboli. The focus is the Allies' invasion of the area. English explanatory material is available, but if you show up in the morning, you may find an English-speaking volunteer present who'll share some additional information. It would probably be even better to contact the museum in advance to check on his likely schedule.

You may wish to read some non-Paestum recent posts so you are aware of current crowded ferry conditions and bus and ferry traffic problems for your excursions. Also check on the best route to Pompeii via Salerno.

I am assuming that there may be just one buffalo mozzarella farm in that area? We visited as part of a RS tour a few years ago…can’t remember the name…….one of my favorite memories! I would guess that you might need to contact them in advance.

@ acraven- Great idea! We're both interested in history, particularly WWII. Eboli is reasonably close to Paestum, and can be on the way to other areas we'll visit.
@Tim- You're so right to suggest other Forum topics. We realize that the timeframe of our trip coincides with vacation times in Italy, but this turned out to be the best time for us to visit. 3 previous trips to Italy were in mid spring and late fall when there weren't as many tourists trying to do the same things we wanted to do. We'll work it out somehow, and if we don't get to visit all the places we'd planned on this trip, I guess we'll just have to come back again!

@cathy, were still investigating the buffalo mozzarella farms in the Paestum area. I believe the one you're referring to is Tenuta Vannulo. I've found it mentioned in recent and past posts.

I was not very excited about visiting a mozzarella farm - but I loved it. I even bought a purse!

Eboli is a lovely town. You will probably have the Operation Avalanche museum to yourself.

There is an interesting German bunker on the beach at Paestum close to the California Beach Club. The beach is beautiful.
