Things to do in Verona

We will be traveling to Verona by train in September 2020 and staying three nights. We will not be renting a car...any suggestions are appreciated as we are traveling in Italy on our own for the first time.

Three nights means two full days. Spend one seeing the sights of Verona: the Roman amphitheater, the Archeological Museum/Roman Theatre, the Castel Vecchio. On the other day, you could take a day trip to Lago Del Garda ( Peschiera Del Garda on the lake is a 14-minute train ride from Verona) or Vicenza (25 minutes by train).

Lake Garda is a great side trip. You can also catch a bus from the plaza in front of the Coliseum, which takes an hour through the countryside, but then goes up the east side of the lake to Garda itself. There is hiking trail along the side of the lake and thorough vineyards and you can catch the bus back for several towns along them lake when you finish your walk. There are lovely lake side cafes and places for wine in Bardolino.

The medieval section of Verona is beautiful and a wonderful walking city. For history and art, I recommend the churches. As in the rest of Italy, these are where history and art are found, preserved and in proper context. The old fort does have some very interesting artifacts. The Arena and Piazza Erbe can act as your center point. I'd skip the food there - not very good and overpriced. But do take time to sit on the park benches for great people watching. The shopping streets are difficult to avoid but if you are adventurous there are narrow lanes to explore. I like walking along the river. It will take you around the city and mostly away from crowds and traffic. Local food and wine, both are wonderful, are best found away from the crowded piazzas. I'm not making any recommendations - I go to Verona every 3rd year and don't keep a record of where I eat. Juliet's balcony is a joke. For me, Verona is a very nice place to be and to meander around. 3 nights should be sufficient. Beyond that I'd probablyt recommend day trips.

It looks like the last opera performance is Sept. 5 (Aida). If they are in Verona at that time I highly recommend it!
