I will be taking a small group of teens to Assisi this June. We are staying 4 nights in one of the monasteries in town. Besides a tour of St Francis, does anyone have other suggestions? Also is there a local pottery factory in town?
The ermitage just outside of town is fascinating. It is where St. Francis and his followers lived, quite rustically. You’ll need transportation. We hired a cab and he waited an hour while we visited for a cost of about €45.
You can take a bus over to Spello and take a lovely hike. If this appeals, send me a PM and I will send directions. Spello is probably my favorite Umbrian town.
Rick Steves’ book has a self-guided Assisi tour that is interesting.
We drove up to the Ermitage and walked it's paths stopping at the shrines along the way.
For pottery, visit Deruta.
I agree with poster above to go to Spello. We spent two weeks there and never tired of this lovely town. There are lots of shops for the teens to look into..
Only if you can hire a car or van, go to Gubbio and go up the mountain in the bird cage funicular.
Mass on a Sunday night in the cathedral is very special. Really worth attending.
Which cathedral are you referring to in your post? Sounds like a great idea.
In the medieval city, up on the mountainside, the Piazza Comune is a very popular gathering place in the evening. Groups of teens can be found there, singing, dancing, playing games. They are very welcoming of 'newcomers' so I would say that would give your teens a good social outlet. There's plenty of gelato there too. And drinks for the adults.
For religious experiences, the noon Mass on Sunday at the Basilica San Francesco can be very beautiful and meaningful. The cloistered nuns at Santa. Chiara chant evening prayer every day, I think at 5:00pm. That is an experience I can't recommend strongly enough.
Assisi is a walking town with spectacular views day and night. Rocco Maggiore, the fortress above the town, is a great destination. Many of the building in Assisi have dates on them from the medieval century but there's also a treasure trove of ancient Roman artifacts under the city. And below that are remnants of Etruscans. That's a lot of history in one place!
Mroetter, this is the cathedral, actually the Basilica that I was referring to.
