Things to do for honeymooners in Rome for 5 days :)

hi!

I am going to be in Rome from june 4-June 9. My fiancé and I would love to have some suggestions on sights to see and places to eat.

We would like to keep our museums down to a minimum and really enjoy Rome or even do a day trip to Florence or anywhere else that is close by.

list of things we are considering to do:
Spanish steps
Trevi Fountain
Vatican (?)
St Peters.

First, congratulations! You will love Italy on your honeymoon. My wife and I spent 5 days in Rome for our honeymoon as well. We made sure to spend time relaxing and watching the world go by as well as hitting some major sights. For one day, I would hit the Forum, Colosseum and Palatine hill. All of these sights are close to each other and use the same ticket. Get your ticket at the Palatine Hill or Forum Because the lines will be shorter. On another day, we took a day trip to Ostia Antica. For a third day, we hit the Vatican Museum (guided garden tour and then the museum/Sistine Chapel) and St. Peter's. One other note-we walked. Lot just to explore the areas we were in. We stayed at Hotel Smeraldo near Campo de Fiore and spent a lot of time exploring that area as well as following the Rick Steves walks (Caesar shuffle and Trastavere walk). Be sure to hit the Pantheon and any random church you encounter- examples are Gesu, Santa Presede, San Giovani in Laterano. You could also day trip to Tivoli or Orvieto. Enjoy!

Get a picnic lunch, bottle of wine and spend an afternoon in the garden and at Borghese gallery. Then a walk to Piazza del popolo
along the Tiber river. A special restaurant near Termini station is La Pentoloccia. Spanish Steps and Trevi fountain can be done in 1/2 day, Vatican and Cistine another 1/2 day.
Enjoy your trip

I strongly recommend that you go to the top of the Victor Emmanuel Monument for the best view of Rome. You look down on the Roman Forum with the Colosseum in the background. You also have a view of the Pantheon and St. Peter's Dome.

For some romantic stuff consider a rooftop bar. My two favorites are the Hotel Forum (old school cocktails hipster style) and Hotel FortySeven (food is pretty good too for a hotel). We did a ten year anniversary trip a few years ago through Tuscany and Rome. One of our absolute favorite places for a romantic dinner was The Library in Rome. Food was better than the Michelen starred restaurants we visited. It wasn't over the top expensive and just a beautiful place. Never been in Rome in the summer but I've visited the Capitoline Museum a couple of times after dark during extended hours. The forum is absolutely magnificent lit up at night!

To add to everyones suggestions which are great, do not miss the Trevi Fountain and the Piazza Navona at night. In the Borghese park you can rent bikes and see the park which is very spread out and scenic. There is also a zoo in the park. Close to the park is the Piazza Del Popolo and this is a nice place to have lunch. Congratulations!

That's not a lot of time, so skip the day trip to Florence and save it for another trip!!! Rome is SO romantic, take your time to sit in a piazza every day.. Go to Campo di Fiori in the morning and buy flowers for your bride and enjoy lunch there.

Many of Rome's famous monuments (Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona) are "walk-bys" and don't take a lot of time but make for a fabulous walk, day or night. Rick's Rome guidebook has some self-guided walks (Dolce Vita Stroll, Heart of Rome) that are perfect for stringing these together and enjoying the city.

A couple of favorite for us that are not often on people's radar:

  • Viaggio nei Fori which are two tours/multimedia shows at night in the Imperial Forums. Fun thing for after dark and out of the heat. You can reserve online, but if there is rain you will be refunded since it is an outdoor activity.

    • Palazzo Valentini Domus Romane, a multi-media enhanced tour of the ruins of a Roman villas right in the middle of the city near Piazza Venezia. Everyone seems to love it. Not advanced reservations are necessary and they do fill up. I think there are only 2 or 3 English tours each day.
    • Tour Trastevere (Rick's book has a nice tour) and then climb the Gianicolo (Janiculum Hill) for a magnificent view over the city.

As advised above, stay in Rome. Venturing off to Florence for a day will just make the time chaotic.
