Can anyone offer suggestions on where we might visit if we are considering traveling south of the Amalfi Coast? Although we've been to Italy a few times, south of the AC is new to us. We are also thinking of starting in Sicily and taking a ferry from Sicily to the Boot and need some advice on where we should go.
The Puglia region is really wonderful, inexpensive, and fun to explore. The "trulli" are cone shaped traditional homes, there are great beaches and national parks etc.
Also have you considered the Aeolian Islands? Lipari, Stromboli, Panarea, etc these can be reached by ferry or Hydrofoil from Naples, or from Milazzo. I have been 3 times and would go again in a minute...
Sicily is great. We've been there twice and were in Puglia this year. I'd pick Sicily (Siracusa and Cefalu were a couple of favorites). We took the ferry from Messina to Villa San Giovanni and then stayed in Scilla, which was a nice spot. It probably depends whether you're driving on taking the train; I don't think a person could get a lot out of Calabria without a car, and it was pretty difficult in Puglia and Basilicata as well (though we knew that going in).
