The RS Best of S. Italy in 13 Days Tour - looking for recent intel (2022-23)

Hello,

Two of us (female) will be taking the 2024 Best of S. Italy tour in late September, 2024. I'd like to hear from folks who took the tour recently (2022-23). I'm particularly interested in the weather you encountered; what to pack (and what to leave home), and what to do on our day off in the Amalfi Coast. We are seasoned travelers, but would love to hear from folks about what they loved (and what could have been improved), Are there restaurants we should reserve (for dinners on our own) before leaving home, etc.?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
J. Oliver

Hi Janet -
While I've not taken the tour, I have been to the Amalfi/Sorrentine coastal region in very early October, so similar time of year as you'll be going. There is no way to accurately predict the weather. As well, people who traveled this past spring, or will throughout summer, might have different weather than you will. Do take a jacket; we needed them in the evenings and if the wind came up.

Here is a chart of last year's last-week-of-Sept. weather:

It looks like you have 2 free days in the region: Day 8 and Day 10. You can explore Sorrento and cruise the shops in the evening of Day 9 (the main part of town becomes largely pedestrian at night). Get some gelato and head over to Villa Comunale (it's a park) at dusk to watch the lights twinkle on all around the Bay of Naples from your lofty perch. Yep, that's Vesuvius over there in the distance.

On Day 10, I'd take a ferry to Capri IF the weather is cooperative; it's not a a trip I'd make in rain. You do NOT need a tour and, personally, I'd give the Blue Grotto a skip. It's not worth it for the very little time inside, and there are many complaints about boatmen hassling people for tips. There is some really fun trekking around the island, and you should take the bus up to Anacapri for a lookabout the little village and to take the chairlift up to the top of Mt Solaro. There's also fun people-watching in both Capri and Anacapri's piazzas so pull up a seat, order a beverage, kick back and observe. :O)

For interesting/scenic walks, I'll especially recommend these two:

Again, you do not need a tour: just follow the instructions.
Restaurants: I'll leave that to other folks. We eat embarrassingly early so never had to make a reservation, just showed up at the opening hour, but we also didn't go to any fancy places. :O)

Hi - I just finished the tour 2 weeks ago. The day in Maiori was light rain on our tour. About half of us stayed in Maiori and fully enjoyed the small town. Some did the short lemon walk to Minori and back. If you want to visit other Amalfi towns, get a driver. The sisters that had a driver and visited 2 different towns had the best experience of those who explored elsewhere that day. The hotel in Sorrento is in a great location to sightsee, eat, shop all within walking distance. A perfect location. It's a great tour, enjoy it!
