As of this writing, we are leaving for Italy in 27 days, 18 hours, 26 min, and 30 seconds....but whose counting. I would really appreciate knowing if anyone has been to Italy within the past month, and if you bought a SIM chip for your iPhone, what kind of deals and coverage are they selling. (Minutes, SMS, Data?) Thanks for any help.
Clif,
If you're going to use another SIM card, your iPhone MUST be unlocked. Also, which model iPhone are you using, and which network are you with? Some older models (ie: Verizon iPhone 4) will not work in Europe.
Cliff i used this deal from TIM with my iphone 5 unlocked, last year.

Just go to any TIM store near your first destination with your passport and they will set you up.
Would definetely do that again.
Have a good trip!
Clif,
Here is a good thread that answers your questions: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/cell-phone-in-italy
Roberto's post on this one gives you more info; https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/calling-within-italy-30b54c57-64d0-47ea-b53d-8aaa1c58bd45 :
We have I phone 5 and have now used it three times in Europe. We have Verizon Wireless as our service and we just sign up for an international plan. It is not free or cheap, but we don't casually use it. We like the fact that you can start and stop the plan when ever you want to. No rules for how much time you have to sign up for. We call home once maybe twice to quickly check in with my 88 year old mom. But only use it for an Emergency. Our adult kids know only for an emergency. Other wise we text or email home which is much cheaper. And also have the phone for emergencies while traveling.
TIM Welcome pack mentioned by Martine is very good.
Thanks to everyone for taking the time to provide some feedback.
The TIM packages that were mentioned, seem very interesting.
