We realize that a lot will be closed up, but wondered if it's even worth a stop through mid to end October, and if so, what would be your recommendations for this area? Varenna, Bellagio, ????? We have been through Como, just never stayed there, and was thinking a one or two-night stay would suffice for this time of year. There is a good chance a friend of my travel partner may tag along, and if so, does anyone have suggestions for a hotel or apartment for 3? Would prefer not to be in a triple room, but if we must...... We just missed the AF sale and tickets doubled overnight, so waiting to see if anyone else has a good sale then will just book it.
I don't know the Lakes region, but for CT, I would book something refundable or wait until the week before to decide, so you can change course if you get rain. Could you go there first? Early October may be more reliable.
I thought Lake Como was gorgeous. We stayed in Bellagio for 2 nights and really enjoyed it, but we were there in May. Not sure what the weather would be, but it might be delightful! I thought it was beautiful and relaxing and would go back (if I say I would go back, I really, really liked it!). We went to 4 or 5 other villages on the ferry and it was fun. With a friend along, not sure it might have the same romantic vibe as it might with 2, and I'm not sure what your friend may be looking for in a vacation stop---might be boring for three---delightful for 2!
