We are looking at having a week in the lakes and wanting to go on the Bernina Express. We are wondering where is the best place to use as a base, we think we will fly into Verona and thinking of September. At this stage we just trying to make a plan so any recommendations are really appreciated. Thanks.

If you are able to find accommodations in Varenna, it is an excellent base for both exploring Lake Como and for taking the Bernina Express. Varenna. Varenna is on the train line direct to Tirano which is on the Italian-Swiss border and where you can board the Bernina express or regular Bernina train. Varenna also has direct ferries to other places on Lake Como.
