The Italian Riviera

In planning for a future mid-summer trip down the road, I was looking to visit towns along the Riviera di Levante. I have been to Cinque Terre before, and will go back again, but I also wanted to go further up the coast along the Riviera to Genova this time. With that, I had a few questions.

I was looking to stay in either Portofino or Santa Margherita Ligure--which one would be better? Is it true to the rumor that Portofino is simply way overpriced from every angle, from food to lodging? If so, I would rather stay in S. Margherita Ligure and just daytrip over. It can't be THAT much nicer can it?

Also, would it be better to just stay in Cinque Terre and daytrip up the coast since it isn't that far away? Yes, it would be a lot of back and forth, since I would eventually be going up to Genova, but I would only have to pack everything up once as opposed to multiple times. Or would it be better to experience these other towns in the evening and at night?

Lastly, are there any other towns between Cinque Terre and Genova that you would recommend visiting (since there are a bunch to choose from)? If so, why? Scenic harbors/coasts and unique, local churches are always a plus..

Thanks for you help!

Bonassola is a small, attractive coastal town with a beach, a train station, and several hotels. I visited there on a daytrip a few years back. It's on the train line between Levanto and Santa Margherita. Bonassola is less hilly than the CT towns.

Check out Rapallo, it was not as expensive as S.M. or Portofino. We stayed there last year and took inexpensive boat trips to Santa M. & Portofino.
