I just cracked open the most wonderful balsamic vinegar, and it was so good I had to take a photo (not to mention write about it). I have never seen this for sale in Rome, a relative sent it down from
Modena. I wish I had about 8 more of these little bottles. Although aged for 40 years, it can't have been cheap :( BUY it if you go there!
It is probably so precious that you should dole it out with an eyedropper! I have seen Balsamic vinegar in my city as old as that and the price was about $300, though admittedly the bottle was a little bigger.
When In Rome,
After seeing the photo, I've added Modena to my list for the next trip. That Balsamico looks awesome!
Cheers!
Norma, very true! A tiny bit goes a long way!
Ken, you really should....the whole region is a food lover's heaven. While you are there, try to fit in Parma as well.
I just saw this featured on, what I call "the other travel guy", Rudy Maxa. His guide showed the specially made barrels they use in the aging process; the people who make this vinegar consider these barrels to be a part of the family:-) And Ken, you should definitely check out Modena; it's a beautiful little city. I went there on a whim and loved it. But watch out for the bicyclists! It seemed ironic that so many people in the headquarters for Ferrari ride bikes.
Penny,
Are you sure they weren't Ferrari bikes?? Heh heh It's true, bicycles everywhere. That is one of the nice things about being located in a plains region. In Rome you can barely bike around the corner without coming up against one of those darned 7 hills!
