My girlfriend and I are considering a 2 day stop in the Bolzano/Castelrotto area of the Dolomites in mid-March 2011. Neither one of us are skiers and as I understand it many trails could be under snow. Do the breathtaking views alone justify a two day stop? If not, what other activites or sights can one experience in March?
High mountains in March are usually cold and snowy. Exact weather details, in the mountains, depends very much on the elevations you'll be at. In general, March in high mountains, for non-skiers, is a time when hiking trails will be under snow or wet from snow melt off. We went to Castelrotto in mid-March a few years ago. We are not skiers, either. The village is very quaint and the scenery is fantastic. Nice restaurants, but not many. The drive to Alpe de Siusse was most enjoyable ... we watched skiers (it is at the end of the ski season) and hanggliders there and ate a great lunch. The villages nearby are worth a visit as well. I would recommend a 2 night stay.
