We are spending 25 days in Italy and I was thinking it would be fun just to see the Dolomite area. I was planning on a mid afternoon arrival on Monday April 13th hoping we could take the lift from Bolzano up to Oberbozen for the afternoon and then spend the evening in Bolzano with a mid morning train departure to Venice. I'm thinking the scenery alone, both on the train ride and at the top of the lift would be worth the hassle. Do you think? I have been having trouble finding out if the lifts will be running and if so how often since this is sort of between ski season and hiking season. Any info to help with this decision would be appreciated.
The Dolomites are very beautiful. We stayed in Castelrotto when we were there. Altho we drove to Bolzano to look around we didn't stay there.
Also, we didn't go to Oberbozen as we didn't have time, but we did take the cable car up to the Alpe de Suisse and the scenery was fantastic. Can't recall how high up Oberbozen is but we were in Castelrotto for 3 nights last fall and we were so thankful that we went to the Alpe on the day that we did, as the other days were quite overcast with low cloud - so had we went on one of those days we wouldn't have seen much at all. My point is that your time spent in the Dolomites will be unpredictable depending on the weather. Just walking around Bolzano tho is interesting so you won't be lacking in things to do regardless of the weather. Enjoy your travels!
Thanks for the info. I'm taking your reply as a yes to the hassle of getting there.
If the weather is bad you could visit the "ice man" at the museum in Bolzano. We did that in 2003 and it was very interesting.
