I am taking a cruise and will be in port for about 10 hours. I don't know that I want to take the offered tour. Can you suggest the places I should see (not necessarilly the tourist places) in the short amount of time. A restaurant might be nice also.

Since most of Rome or the parts you want to see are tourist, I don't know exactly what you want to do? A good way to get a quick and convenient overview of the Rome within the time allowed is the hop on/off tour buses. There are several routes. Pick one you like. Don't know if you have a true ten hours in the city or not. From the port, plan two hours getting into the city via train, and almost the same returning. You ten could drop to six or seven in a hurry.
