The Amalfi Peninsula: Travel from Sorrento to Paestum

Has hydrofoil travel from Sorrento to Salerno become any easier? I note that in 2010, the earliest ferry was at 9:30 AM - way too late. My husband uses a cane and long walks are no longer possible, but we can taxi or arrange a car from Salerno to Paestum.

I believe it is a two-stage ferry: Sorrento to Amalfi and then Amalfi to Salerno. A car and driver from Sorrento directly to Paestum might be the best bet.

Over the road, it would be a bus Sorrento-->Amalfi (1 hr 40 min), change, bus Amalfi-->Salerno (50 min), change, train Salerno-->Paestum (40 min). BTW, the train station is adjacent to bus terminal in Salerno. And although I've never been there, I've heard there is a fair amount of walking once you get to Paestum itself.

If you are talking ferry, that means it will be in high season, meaning a lot more people riding the buses. And from what I see, there is no ferry from Amalfi to Salerno, but Laurel may be correct in that there is one. So...given that and your husband's mobility issues--none of the solutions are great, but the best seems to be ferry to Amalfi, bus (or ferry) to Salerno, then I would hire a driver/tour guide to take you from Salerno to Paestum and do the ruins.

Yes, there are ferries from Amalfi to Salerno:

You can explore the site I've linked for various combinations (e.g. Sorrento>Positano> Salerno) but they do not show any direct ferries from Sorrento to Salerno, or at least not yet. Could be that it's because it's still a little early in the season or, as Laurel said, it's a two-ferry process.

Unfortunately, I'm also not seeing ferries around the coast - other than to Capri - which run very early in the morning.
I've also checked the Coop.Sant'Andrea site for ferries between Sorrento and Salerno and it's not showing any either.

nan, you might use the Search box on the desktop version of this site, because some past discussions have had some good hints for Paestum. Aside from walking (probably on uneven ancient roads) around the temples, it is challenging (even on an unlimited budget) to do Paestum from Sorrento. We're able-bodied and we gave up on the idea during our five-night stay in Sorrento.

I would add that ferry schedules vary between high and low season. Make sure you know which schedule you are looking at. Every morning we went to the Circumvesuviana station in Sorrento, the line for the bus to Positano/Amalfi had more people in line than would fit on one bus. And that was in late May.

Thank you all for these replies - you all have the right of this, of course. It's a prodigious undertaking for someone in perfect health, let alone for a person with 'mobility issues', but this is a man who never gives up.

In his younger days, my husband lived and studied near Sorrento, with weekly trips all over the Peninsula. He wants to return to Paestum to sketch the ruins once more, so I bit the bullet and arranged a day tour with a local transport and tour company, Aequalimo. Their responses have been prompt and complete.

My husband asks that we not take the coast road, but go back towards Pompeii, and arc around the south of Vesuvius on the A3. He says it's quicker and more straight forward - and warns me we're not stopping in Salerno.
Maybe I can talk him into a return on the coast road? I'd like to linger in Amalfi or Positano. He can nap!
I'll let everyone know how the day turns out.
Thanks again to all.

How fantastic, sketching the ruins! So, are you taking the day tour originating in Sorrento? If so, no doubt the best choice.

Enjoy!

The temples in Paestum have been undergoing restoration, two of the three were restored the last time I visited. Restoration most visible was removing the plant material that accumulates in the cracks between the stones. They are beautiful.

Hi nan. I am not sure if this helps. We leave for Italy on June 13th. Not long now. We booked with Aldo's Limo to take us to Salerno, Paestum, Amalfi, Ravello and Positano for the day about 10-12 hours. It costs 330 euros cash for the two of us. Cheaper if we want to share but we like the idea of just two of us. They pick us up from our hotel at 7.30am. This is for the 6th July..we will also visit the war memorial in Salerno

Rocky, it sounds as if you have good prices. I'm deep into Rick's 2017 Italy book, and finding other transfer companies and drivers he recommends.

Aequalimo, with a 5 star Trip Advisor rating, charges 480 E for a Civitavecchia (port closest to Rome), and 300 E for a round trip from Sorrento to Paestum (the coast road with hairpin turns doesn't do it for me - we'll take the Autostrata instead). Those prices seem reasonable to me for the service provided.
I'll let everyone know how we do. Hope you have a great time too.
