Our family which has roots in the Abruzzo is planning a short visit there in October. What hindrances will we find a a result of the earthquake of 2009.

We were in L'Aquila several months after the earthquake. The city had been evacuated and it was cordoned off to the general public. I was able to enter only with a police and fire escort because I was part of a delegation that had done some fund raising. The authorities at the time said that the buildings were so unstable, even the ones that appeared intact that they thought it would be years before people could return.
I do not know the state of that city now, but the surrounding areas were open for business. Unless, you were planning to go directly into L'Aquila, you should not have a problem. If L'Aquila is your destination, get more info first. The city probably has a web site you can check
