I want to say thanks to all the help I have recieved here on the boards. Our final itinerary from Aug. 29 - Sept. 17 is as follows. Fly in to Rome stay (2) days. Travel to Vernazza by train and spend (3) days. Train to Siena stay (5) days athttp://www.agriturismomarciano.it/index.htm. Next we will travel by train to Sorrento for (6) days and than back to Rome the day before our flight home. We will be renting a car on our second day in Siena since we arrive on a Sunday there. Since we stayed in Vernazza before I could not see a reason to rent a car before getting to Siena. I am looking for the best place to take my wife for dinner since it's her 60th birthday while we are in Sorrento. Any ideas ? Thanks again everyone for the help here. Any more ideas and suggestions would be appriceated.

Since we stayed in Vernazza before I could not see a reason to rent a car before getting to Siena.
The train trip Vernazza to Siena involves 4 trains: Vernazza - La Spezia/ La Spezia - Pisa/ Pisa - Empoli/ Empoli- Siena. It is not fun. we did it once and had to stand up for two of the segments, about 2 hours total. Since you need a car in Siena, rent it in La Spezia if you can (although Sunday may be a problem, there, too).

We visited Sorrento last September and loved Il Buco. It was recommended in Rick Steves Italy and was a lovely setting. The food was amazing!
