We planning a day trip to Florence and want to take the non-stop train.
There are trains from both the Termini and Tiburtina stations but the price is less than half as much from Tiburtina. Our hotel is a short walk to Termini and I'm thinking we can walk there and take the subway to Tiburtina and save a bunch of money. Does that sound right? Any idea why the big price difference?
The Tiburtina station is used by the new private rail line. The difference in price is marketing. The new train system does not offer as many options for travel.
You can travel to Tiburtina easily. The new operator sometimes have much cheaper fares. They are competing each other. If fares are lower on the date/time that suits your trip, definitively go with Italo. Much newer trains and one generation more modern than the "freccie" by Trenitalia.
Stephen, there are 50+ runs a day from Rome-Termini to Florence each day. Most are high-speed non-stops. Fares are as low as 19Euro. Unfortunately at this time, you can't see the runs or discounted fares past June 8 on Trenitalia as they are quite tardy with posting their new timetables.
Stephen, If you're willing to commit to a specific departure time, you can buy discounted tickets on the Freccia trains which will likely be about the same price as those offered by Italo. Have a look at the excellent www.roninrome.com website for purchasing details. You can also buy the tickets when you arrive in Rome, but you'll be paying "Base Fare" which will be more expensive. However, that provides more flexibility as you'll be able to pick a departure time that fits with circumstances at the time. I usually buy tickets a day or two before I'll be travelling. The Italo train also uses Firenze SMN station, so the only difference will be the departure station in Rome. Happy travels!
