We will be stayin close to Termini station and woul like to go to Tivoli to see the 2 villas. I have read several recommendations but they seem confusing. Can someone simplify this please and give me an approximate amount of time it will take? Half day, full day, long fully day? Thanks!
Since it takes an hour to get there on a direct train, I'd budget a full day.
Hey Tammy,
Most of the trains from Rome to Tivoli start at Tiburtina but that's an easy metro (subway) ride away. At Tivoli it's a three-quarters of a mile walk from the train station to Villa d'Este. Trains from Termini to Tivoli does run every hour.
Train direct from Termini. Once you reach Tivoli, you will need to walk about 20 minutes down the hill through the old town to get to Villa d'Este.
The other option is to take Metro to Ponte Mammolo and then change to Cotral bus. The bus drops you off in the center close to Villa d'Este.
Both methods don't cost a whole lot and will probably end up taking a similar amount of time.
Is it possible to take the direct train from termini, walk to villa d’ Estes then catch a bus from there to Hadrians villa? If so then what’s the best way to get back to termini from there? Also if there is that bus between villas can you buy tickets on board?
You haven’t mention the Tivoli gardens and fountains at Villa d’Este which is the main reason most people visit. The fountains are incredible, and work with gravity.
It appears there are a few trains to Tivoli each day that depart from Termini. Use the Trenitlia website to reserch schedules. When I visited Hadrian's Villa, I took a bus from Tiburtina but it only stopped along the main road and so I had to walk a fair distance to the entry gate. Same longish walk for the return trip. The official website confirms that the closest bus stop is 300 meters away. Maybe a local taxi between the villas is an option.
