We are arriving late at night from Sorrento into Rome, around 20h, and i am wondering what the best way to get from the train station to our hotel right near the trevi fountain? Are taxis "sketchy" in Rome? Should i be worried about being ripped off from a cab driver in front of the station late at night? We are planning on taking public transit in all of our other cities, but because we are taking a day trip in pompeii on the way to Rome, we are getting in late.. so im wondering what our safest option would be to get to our hotel. Thanks!
Natalie, In those circumstances, I'd probably take a Taxi as Metro stops are not convenient to the Trevi Fountain area. Taxis that I've used from Termini on past occasions have not been "sketchy", but it's a good idea to use the "official" Taxi's with phone number and rates displayed. When you walk out the front doors of Termini, there should be lots of them waiting. You might want to read the "TAXI" section in the Italy Guidebook (page 682 in the 2010 edition). If you're arriving at 20:00, that's not really "late" for Rome. Most of the sidewalk Cafés will just be getting up to speed and the Piazzas will be busy. Happy travels!
Take a taxi. Make sure you take one from the front door where they line-up waiting for clients. Also make sure they are marked as taxis with the symbol on the doors with a number and a meter inside. Go to the front of the line and go from there. They are usually honest and will quickly take you to the hotel. When you go to pay tell him the denomination of the euro bill so there will not be any confusion. Buon viaggio,
Yep, find the taxi stand and wait in line. Good suggestions from RB on naming the euro denomination before handing it to him.
