Termini Station to Airport in Rome

We will be staying at a Hotel in Rome quite close to the Termini Station. Originally we had planned to take the train to the Airport on our trip home but I'm second guessing our plans as our flight home is at 10:20 AM. How long is the train ride to the Fiumicino Airport? Any suggestions on whether we should take a cab to the airport or train? We will be departing on a Monday morning so I don't know which would be faster, traffic in Rome or train? Any thoughts?

According to different websites its a 31 minute trip on the express train. I'm planning on taking the train with an 11:30 am flight. The taxi looks like it will take 45 minutes assuming there is no traffic.

The train is very dependable at 30 min but add another 30 just to get to the station and train. The train is now 14E. Another alternative is for a shuttle arrange for you by your hotel. Door to door and our last it was 36E for two which is only 8E more which is a reasonable price. Went about 7 and it was a 45 min ride.

It's wise to be at FCO a full three hours before a flight home across the Atlantic. If you take the Leonardo Express departing at 06:52, you'll arrive at FCO at 07:23. Or play it even safer and take the 06:22 train which arrives at 06:53.

Thank you both for your speedy response. I think the shuttle from our Hotel, door to door sounds like a good idea. The small increase in fare is worth the peace of mind for this night owl.

Susan, given the fact that you're departing on a Monday morning, using the Leonardo Express might be a good option to consider. Traffic could be heavy, which will affect travel times if using a Shuttle or Taxi.

From the Termini area, you have perhaps four options. The LE train (at €14 each), the SitBus Shuttle (€8 each), a taxi (€40 for up to four people), or a shuttle - various options and prices. The Leonardo Express leaves at 22 and 52 after the hour and does take 31 minutes. Once you arrive at FCO, if you are leaving on a USA-Flagged Airline, you will have to go to Terminal 5. If you ride the train or SitBus you'll have to catch an airport shuttle to T5 (it's about 900 meters from the main terminals and train station). So do plan for that time in your travel plans. Because you are close to Termini, I might opt for the taxi, then train, then SitBus. At 7 AM traffic won't be too heavy (yet!). The SitBus will take almost an hour to get there - a taxi perhaps 30+ minutes (We call the exciting taxi ride to FCO the "flight" before the "flight.") The train, as stated is 31 minutes. When we travel to FCO, we rode the SitBus if we had plenty of time - and a taxi when we felt lazy! Coming home to Rome, we always rode the taxi as we were just ready to get home - we just figured that as part of the price of our airline ticket! Yikes...that's a lot to think about. Thank you all for the great advise, I'll discuss our options with my husband. I'm glad I've decided to plan so far in advance since I can't think straight early in the AM and would hate to miss our flight!

The express train will be more dependable than a taxi or shuttle. Taxis and shuttles will depend on traffic conditions whereas the train is a constant 31 minutes and set departure times.

Doubt you'll see too much traffic at 7 AM on a Monday in Rome... that's the time of day I taught my wife to ride a motorino in the city! Once you get to Via Aurelia or C. Colombo, you'll be going against whatever traffic there may be.

I have taken the Leonardo many times without a problem. It is fast, dependable, and well worth the 14e. I generally stay about 4 blocks from the station in the area of the Roma Opera House and the walk takes 10 minutes. The walk from the train terminal at FCO is about 7-8 minutes to the T5 shuttle (navetta). The shuttle is located to the left of the walkway as you walk over the roadway. Buon viaggio, RB

Susan, just got back from Rome and we used Rome Cabs both ways. It cost 45 euro each trip but it was worth it to me to not to have to lug my stuff ( I had a wheeled bag and a tote bag so didn't check in luggage). They picked me up at my hotel door in a private car and dropped me off at the terminal. They'll let you know how much time you need when they schedule your pick up. Google it or I think the website is romecabs.com. They don't even want a credit card no. it's purely an honor system!

My husband and I took the Leonardo Express to catch our 11:20 am flight and we took the 7:20 train. If you are close to the train station, buy your tickets the day before you leave then you can proceed straight to the LE platform which is a LONG walk through the terminal [INVALID] I would say a 1/2 mile walk. Also know which terminal your plane is leaving from. We were in Terminal 5 which required a bus shttle from the main terminal to 5, so it was good we gave ourselves a lot of time before the flight. A three hour lead would not be unreasonable. I got a copy of the LE timetable off the internet, but can't remember where [INVALID] just Goggle it.

Thanks again to all who've posted their experience with Rome transportation. Our hotel is just a few blocks from the train station and I was just about to decide on the LE train when I saw the 1/2 mile walk through the terminal. I've flip flopped between shuttle and train several times and probably won't decide until the day before departure. If only I was a morning person (insomnia) this would be a breeze.

I am not sure it is a half mile walk but it may seem like that. It is a long ways.
