I was planning on staying in the Termini neighborhood until a few people suggested I try the Trastevre neighborhood instead. I plan on walking and
using public transportion to see the city. Once again I am back at square one. What neighborhood to stay in. We are looking at spending $150.00 a night.
Trastevere is vastly more interesting and feels a lot more "authentic." Termini, on the other hand, is close to public transportation. We've stayed in both areas and we've been happy. I preferred the feel of Trastevere, and we were able to walk everywhere from there.
In Trastevere right now! It is a great authentic neighborhood with the best eating in Rome. It connects easily by public transportation to all of Rome. Piazza Belli in Trastevere is the main hub for the tram, bus, taxi. Tram 8 goes across the river over the Ponte Garibaldi and stops at the next big transportation hub, Largo Argentina. From here, you can get anywhere is Rome on any number of buses. It is also still quite easy to walk to hotspots. We have loved it. We stayed at Arco Del Lauro Bed and Breakfast.
Rick and some of his fans prefer Transtere because they think it is more "authentic" and they have created an obcession with that side of the Tiber. There are several things, including the Vatican on that side of the river but the greater part and the central part of Roma is on the other side, the Termini side. There are more, and I think better, choices for lodging and eating on the Termini side. For example, Hotel Aberdeen is in my opinion the best place to stay in Roma and it is one of Rick's favorites too. Remember the Forum, the Colosseo, the Captoline Hill, most of the largest churches, the most famous ruins and the center of Roma is on the Termini side.
Your money will go further near Termini than in Trastevere. Rome is pretty compact so I wouldn't worry about being across the river. There are areas of Trastevere that are closer to the Forum/Colosseum than the Termini area. The only downside of the Trastevere area is that it can be loud, depending on where your hotel is. Trastevere is filled with fun restaurants and wine bars.
I agree with Charles. Trastevere is much further and probably not walkable to the major sites in center Rome whereas everything but the Vatican is very walkable. It is about an hour hike from Termini to the Vatican. I would vote for Termini.
Hands down Trastevere. Lots of good local restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. Enzo's restaurant serves authentic Roman cuisine and has people lined up out front waiting for tables. It's just a hole in the wall place. Reservations are a must. I always stay at the Arco del Lauro B & B. Great place, at a great price. Lorenza is a gracious and helpful host.
Trastevere is just across the Tiber from the ancient sites and the Victor Emmanuelle Monument. To get closer to the center, take the #8 Tram. It ends a few blocks away from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.
Trastevre seems like it would be a more fun and exciting place to stay - more options with restuarants and nightlife. But I've stayed near Termini and it's nice too with plenty of restaurants and transit links.
Trastevre is certainly as close walking to many of the major sights as Termini is - and is a more scenic neighborhood in itself.
Termini has much better transit links though. If that is important to you, I'd suggest Termini.
We stayed in Piazza Navona for that price, if i had to choose between Trastevere and Termini, i would choose Trastevere.
I spent a week and stayed at Hotel Monteverde & Austria. It is also on Tram 8 andlots of good places to eat close by. I waked down several blocks to a open air Market several times and also to a street with lots of stores withsame things as downtown but lower prices. The hotel is very quite with big rooms.
