Temperatures in Northern Italy and packing
I am traveling to Verona up to Innsbruck and Vienna in September 20 through October 10. I am wondering what type of clothing I should pack for that time of year.
You can check several websites where you can see the average temperatures for that time of the year in each city you are interested in.
However, it's also a good idea to check the weather forecast just before you leave. That should give you an idea of the expected temperatures and precipitation in the following week or so. Things change from year to year.
Also Innsbruck is really close to the Alps, therefore between day and night there are easily at least 20 degrees difference in temperatures. In addition if you decide to visit places nearby higher in altitude, temperatures will drop quickly as you climb up.
Everyone says “layers” and I agree. Also depends on what you are going to be doing. Assuming casual touring, Use your Fall stuff as you’d wear at home with attention to lightweight pieces that dry quickly if you need launder. Wool tees (long or short sleeved) work great with a cardigan, hoodie, interlock, or terry jacket. Add to that a packable puffy jacket like Lands End or LLBean sell and you’ll be ready for most anything. A hooded jacket or a rain hat just in case.
For dressing up, I bring a blouse that works alone or with a cardigan and add a scarf or necklace.
I would add several pairs of smart wool socks, hiking boots and a gore tex raincoat. I'd rather carry the extra weight than be cold & wet. You can add a light-weight pair of shoes to wear around town or out to dinner. This time of year can have very changeable weather, I'm wore my raincoat & hiking boots today outside Stockholm and it's only late August.
Check weatherspark.com for historical averages and year-by-year weather data, for nearly anywhere in the world. temps, cloudiness, humidity, chance of rain, amount of rain, daylight hours, wind direction...it really drills down..oh and most of this is available on an hourly basis for any given day...in a graph format. Really easy site to understand.
Then check the forecast as you are closer to departure.
