We are looking at an apartment rental in Florence. The location seems to be in a great location for walking distance to train station (10 min walk) and close to Duomo. The one thing I noticed is it does not have air conditioning. Would be here around July 2nd to 6th. Thoughts? Is air conditioning a must that time of year?
Depends on you. It'll be hot; probably in the mid to upper 80s in the day; mid 60s at night. Your apartment will almost certainly have windows that open, but some people say the mosquitoes are worse than the heat.
What kind of summer temps are you used to? Personally, I hate a/c, even when we visit Arizona. But some folks live in the northern tier of the US and consider a/c a necessity.
I'd ask if the apartment has a fan. A fan will bring in the fresh evening air, and keep the mosquitoes at bay, as well.
We were there first week of July last summer and it was in the 90's. Granted, there was a heat wave through Europe (Paris was 97. We had a non-airconditioned apartment there and it was sweltering). So if its hot hot, you could be, um, hot
Florence is at the bottom of a bowl. It can be quite hot (mid to upper 90s) but even worse, it can be very humid. Air conditioning in an apartment is essential probably more for your sanity. Also, take care to stop frequently for water and shade. You don't say where you are from. Are you used to heat and oppressive humidity like New Orleans in August? Florence is at least that bad.
Florence will be hot that time of year. After walking around all day, you will welcome the AC in your room. In my opinion, AC is a MUST.
Thoughts? Is air conditioning a must that time of year?
If you would be comfortable in Phoenix, Dallas or Orlando in July without A/C, then you will be fine in Florence. Otherwise lack of A/C is a deal breaker for me.
It’s too hot even with air conditioning.
Think New Orleans in the Summer time.
Air conditioning is a MUST in July.
While it will be quite warm - guaranteed - and very humid - many Italians have a mistrust of cold air on them, and air conditioning. Many of the older generation won't have any sort of air conditioning.
By staying in apartments you may be getting closer to the local customs.
... and another reason to get A/C - Italian windows often don't have screens, so some places can be prone to mosquitoes.
Ciao Areuafan, yes AC is a must . I have lived in Florence all my life and in the summer Florence is truly very warm. If you apartment is in the city center it is quite likely that there are people up until 1-2am. Florence is enjoyable during the summer evenings and you'll probably want to sleep with closed windows/shutters in a quiet room. If you accept an honest suggestion.....do not renounce to an apartment with A/C. you will not regret and will enjoy your sleep ....with a couple of mosquitos :-). Regards, Elena
