Tell me if you think I'm crazy.......

In July,by train,we are leaving Santa Margherita on our way to Rome, I thought about taking the train to Fierenze, getting there around 11:30am, go to(taxi?) Academia to see David etc, and take another train (leaving around 4:00) to Rome getting in there around 5:30pm. The thing is, we will have our luggage with us. Does this sound do-able or just plain crazy?

Sounds like you've got the train schedules nailed down. So this seems very do-able. You can leave your luggage at the train station.

I think you'll want reservations at the Accademia, though. Others here can weigh in on that.

You can do it if you make reservations for the museum. Can someone weigh in on the luggage storage at the Florence train station? I know in Rome the lines can be very long - up to an hour in peak season!

I've never stored luggage in Florence but I haven't seen a station yet that didn't have storage available. There are some storage scams, it's probably best to read about those and ask someone who works there for the best place to store your stuff. Florence is a big tourist town, thus a magnet for tourist scams.

Academia can be a quick stop to see David. Without reservations you won't get in. You don't have near enough time to see Uffizi, probably use the rest of your time to stroll downtown maybe climb the Duomo or Giotto's tower for a view.

Almost anything can be done but at a hi euro price and if you are so rushed even with reservations is it worth it? Will you really enjoy running thru Accademia it is meant to be enjoyed and examined. of course it is your choice but Florence has a lot that you will miss as you are running. July is also a peak season for traffic and visitors.

Florence wasn't even on our itinerary until I had the brainstorm 2 days ago to "swing by" and see David. I realize we will only have a few hours and won't be able to "savor" anything, but I would like to see one of the most famous art pieces in the world since we will be so close. I'd also love to see the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio but I know that's really pushing it! We could take an earlier train in and a later train out, too. I would definitly order tickets to Academia beforehand. But this is great feedback, I appreciate your opinions!

Do it! You sound like our family-squeeze in everything you can until the minute that you have to leave!

Go earlier and stay later if you can-you will fall in love with Florence.

You will love Santa Margherita! I assume you will take the ferry to Portofino? ?

If you have your heart set on it, it is certainly doable. But, why not save Flornce for the next trip? The David is only one, and not the greatest, of the world class attractions there.

In Rome you can see the most powerful (my opinion) Michelangelo sculpture, Moses. You'll find him in the Church of St. Peter in Chains.

It's do-able but a big day. Looking at the Trenitalia site you don't want an earlier train as you are already leaving seriously early, but perhaps consider a later train to Rome. If you really want to see David then do it as you'll alway wished you had if you don't.
