We'll be taking our 16, 13, and 8 year old kids to Florence for 4-5 days in June of 2013. Any advice on places they could naturally interact with people their own ages while we are there?

Gelato is a great idea.

This, I hope, will not be seen as a silly comment. They will be in the same places that American 16, 13, and 8 year olds will be - playing fields, cinemas, shopping malls, corner shops, etc. They also go for gelato.

Have them learn a bit of Italian before you go. Hard to "interact" without language, even if gelato is involved.
