Are shorts and shirts with Sandals and/or sundresses sufficient for a trip in July to Rome, Florence, Amalfi coast. She will bring a light jacket with short sleeves. This is fine in California where we live. Will it be appropriate in Italy?
A friend just returned from Rome, saying that "Shorts and tank tops are frowned upon." So my teenaged daughter and her friend will bring along skirts (some covering knees, for St. Peter's) but they also insist on packing some shorts, so we'll see. I'll be interested to hear what others think.
By shorts are you referring to the short shorts a lot of teen girls wear, or more of a bermuda short? I would say short shorts would be inappropriate. A pair or two of longer shorts should be fine, especially along the coast. I think generally speaking she will be happier with sundresses. Capri's would also work.
Cover the knees and shoulders.
Short shorts are frowned upon in cities like Rome and Florence. Can't really speak for Amalfi coast. Tanks will be fine but they won't be able to visit any churches without a scarf or jacket of some type to cover their shoulders. If they wear the shorts, this will also prohibit them from entering any churches. Capri pants, longer skirts or pants are a better option and will allow you to visit all the sites.

The sundresses will look quite Euro chic. Short shorts OK in beach area (Amalfi). As others have mentioned, visits to churches require below the knee shorts at least and no bare shoulders.
Sandals are OK, as long as she can walk easily on cobblestones with them. There will be much walking. I wear Keen sandals or Mary Janes and they really keep my feet happy.
Buona vacanza!
Young girls in short shorts will get alot of attention.
They will likely get some anyways, but short shorts,, well personally, they are for the beach, not the city.
She will not be allowed in churches with uncovered knees and shoulders. My 11 yr old wasn't ,, she had to cover up,, so I am sure a teen girl would have less of a chance. Capris, sundresss and a wrap or sweater are needed for city touring to get into sights like St Peters,, which really, should not be misseed. It is roasting hot, so lots of gauzy cotten would be my choices.
Are knees to be covered in all churches?
Am planning to pack mostly capris and maybe 1 or 2 pairs of bermuda shorts. However, if we're out exploring and want to pop in a church, I don't want to be turned away because I wore bermudas that day.
