My husband and I will be in Italy for an extended time in late Sept. to Nov. He needs to continue his business and therefore needs high speed internet. We've looked at several plans but I'd like to know what other people have found and are using for business.

I have a website for my business and did not take my laptop with me for our 3-week trip. I was able to access my corporate email daily through the internet and did just fine. Most hotels that we stayed at had a computer in their lobby. Occasionally, I had to stop into an Internet cafe and use a terminal. It was certainly better than lugging my 15-lb laptop with carrying case.
Try to avoid bringing the laptop if you can. There are lots of hotels in the larger cities that offer high speed internet. The smaller hotels & B&Bs have a higher tendency to offer the service for free. I've seen rates at higher end hotels for as much as 10 euro per hour.
I know it's nice to vacation without a laptop...this isn't a vacation however. So he will need to bring his business which is his laptop. So unavoidable. That's why I was inquiring about a way to figure out how he can run his business without going to an internet cafe. That just won't work. So something like a data card that works there or a service that we might not have here.

Depending upon where you're staying, you might be able to use the services at your hotel(s). An increasing number of hotels, B&Bs, etc., offer internet access, frequently with wi-fi access.
Most hotels in larger cities tend to have Wifi. The nicer places also have wired connections (but pack your own network cable in case they don't have one). However, high-speed is surprisingly unavailable outside of cities.
It's a wired world though so don't worry too much about it. Just make sure he brings a plug adapter and a travel surge protector (the latter is to give him an extra layer of protection for his computer, they cost about $30-40 and are tiny).
