Td Bank Debit Card

Has anyone had trouble using their TD Bank debit card with the VISA logo in Italy? I just have the regular card.

Audrey, Are you planning to use this only for ATM withdrawals? Your TD Card should work fine for that, but may not work for point-of-sale transactions. I've found that my TD card seems to work "intermittently" in Italy. I tend to use my Credit Union debit / ATM card most of the time. I would highly recommend packing along a "backup" ATM card, in case there are problems with your primary card (I've had that happen). Whichever card(s) you use, note that travel funds must usually be in chequing account with a four number PIN. Cheers!

I have two international credit cards, but would just use it to withdraw cash. Thank you for the response.

Using "credit" cards instead of debit cards or ATMs to withdraw cash is costly.

I'm sorry, I meant that in addition to using the Td debit card with the visa logo to with draw cash, I also have two credit cards with no international fees. I plan on using those for hotels and dinners etc and just the cash when I can't use credit.

I have not had a problem using my TD bank card in Italy except for one bank which I believe is local to Tuscany and which did not display the PLUS network symbol. The bank machines will tell you if they are on the PLUS network which is what TD uses. The logo is on the back of your debit card. I do not have a TD Bank card with a VISA logo on it but if you use it in Canada as a debit card, it should also work in Italy and I believe it will still use the PLUS network for banking purposes as opposed to credit card uses. I have a 4 digit PIN - I'm not sure if that limitation exists anymore on any European banking machines, but you might want to make sure your PIN is only 4 numbers to ensure that it works. You will generally only be able to withdraw from your principal account - here in Canada I can draw on either my savings or chequing account, but the chequing account is primary and that's the one that gets dinged when I use an ATM in Italy. You won't be given a choice of accounts to withdraw from on the Italian machine. Also, be aware of your withdrawal limits from both TD and the machine you are using. TD has a weekly limit I believe and it isn't a lot if you need to pay for an apartment rental in cash for example. Also banking machines in Italy may have their own internal limit as to how much you can take at a time. It can be as low as 250 euro. You can usually just put through a second transaction if you need more as long as you are within your TD bank limit.
