We are 3 senior women traveling in Rome. Our hotel is a few blocks from the Vatican so that will not be a problem. After St. Peter’s we want to go to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain but do to some mobility issue & can’t walk very long distances. We were considering the Hop On Hop Off but their reviews are terrible. Is a taxi or Uber a good option?
I have found the taxi service in Rome easy to deal with and very useful. There are plenty of taxi stands - use one of those. Do not try to hail a cab - if you do, make sure the meter hasn't been running!
Taxicabs are your friend. Uber Service not allowed in Italy except for UberBlack, which is a luxury black limo service driven by professional licensed limo drivers.
Do not hail cabs. It’s not an Italian practice, taxicabs driving by are on their way to pick up customers therefore won’t stop. You can get a taxi at taxi stands (check online map below, every orange dot is a stand)

Or you can call one. The general taxi tel number is
060609
Save your energy for what you really want to do in Rome, and take taxis! Distances are fairly short in Rome, and prices are reasonable. Split three ways, this is a no brainer for me! They don't hail on the street, so locate a taxi stand or a hotel with a rank of taxis. Restaurants will always call one for you after your meal. Taxis are lifesavers when you're lost, confused, hot, wet, tired, late, or just want to watch the scenery go by!
Official Roman taxis (white, with Rome logo on the side and with meters inside) are DEFINITELY the way for the three of you to go.
In Piazza di Spagna (the piazza at the bottom of the Spanish Steps) you'll find a line of white Roman taxis at one far end when you're ready to leave. Here's a 360 degree photo: https://goo.gl/maps/6o3AHnKFUt92
I haven't figured out where the closest taxi queue is for the Trevi Fountain because the streets around it are so narrow, but maybe someone else knows?
Which hotel are you staying? I’m helping my parents plan a trip in September and the hotel options are overwhelming!
We are staying at Starhotels Hotel Michelangelo due to its proximity to the Vatican. My friend stayed there last month and said it was clean and well appointed although the rooms are on the small side. Lots of local restaurants in the area.
The area near the Trevi fountain is pedestrianized therefore the closest taxi stands are probably on Piazza Barberini or Piazza Venezia. There might be one near Palazzo Chigi as well.
I’m sure there are taxis parked in front of the Hotel Michelangelo as well. If not there is one on Via della Conciliazione, next to Piazza St. Peter.
Hey Arline
You can check out bestrometour.com, giving tours in golf carts. Look at how many hours you want plus what you wanna see, your “paws” will love ya. They are guides with all the info they stop at places for you to take pictures. Split the cost by 3. Did something similar since i have a bad knee and it was heaven to me. Happy travels
Aloha
Thanks for the info on the golf car tours in Rome. It sounds interesting and would solve some of the mobility issues.
I always make sure everyone in our travel group has a business card from the hotel where we are staying.
Then if the group splits up, whoever wants to take a taxi back to the hotel just has to show the taxi driver the card. Taxi drivers don't know every hotel in Rome by memory and this makes it more efficient.
I love the golf cart tour idea.
Have a Great Trip!

Do the taxi's in Rome (rest of Italy) accept credit card payments?
yes. they accept credit cards. Although I'm sure they prefer cash. Except for the ride city-airport, which costs 48euro, if you use the taxi within the city center, is likely to be under 10 or 15 euro.

Thanks Roberto!
There's 4 of us in our party traveling next month and I think we'll most likely use the taxis vs the bus or metro for our first trip to Italy.
I didn't see it mentioned on this thread...but anyone else have experience with the "it Taxi" app? Thanks.
I loved the it Taxi app but I don't know how good the English language setting is. (I use the Italian setting.)

Thanks! Just curious ... if we got in our taxi from the taxi stands/queue....can you still pay your fare using the app?
