Taxis in Pompeii

Does anyone know how late they run between the two train stations???

What two stations? Pompeii (the ruins) is easily reachable by walk from the Pompeii Scavi station. You can just google "Pompeii Scavi station" and look at the map and see how short the distance is. Are you staying in the town of Pompeii itself?

I believe there is a Trenitalia station close to the Pompeii Scavi station. we were going to take the train to Paestum on the Trenitalia and come back later in the evening. Wanted to know if we could catch a taxi from that station to the Scavi to head back to Sorrento

The Trenitalia station is in modern Pompeii city and is ten minutes or so from another entrance on the opposite side of Pompeii Scavi. The key question is how hard it is to get a cab in modern Pompeii. You have proposed a very long trip by public transportation.

We gave up on the idea of Paestum from Sorrento, alas.

Edit: Here are the car directions:

I see that there are actually two Trenitalia stations, Pompeii [i.e. modern Pompeii] and Pompeii Valle. I also see that the Amphitheater Entrance is the name of the gate on that side of Pompeii Scavi. Since Pompeii Scavi will be closed when you return from Paestum, that isn't actually relevant to your question.

I would send a PM to Zoe, she would know. I didn't attempt Paestum and Pompeii on the same day. I just took the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi. I was at Pompeii over 4 hours, if not a bit more.

Wasn't intending to do Pompeii and Paestum same day. Was just using Pompeii as the starting point and return point for the trip to Paestum. We would take the Trenitalia train on the return trip from Paestum and catch the Circumvesuviana train back to Sorrento ,our home base. Need to find out how late the taxis run from the Trenitalia station to the Circumvesuviana station

It's more than two hours by train and bus combo, or you can take a bus, from Pompei to Paestum. Both might involve changes in Salerno.

Hi Paul,

I will be doing this exact trip Saturday, October 15th. I have done a ton of research so here is my schedule for the day. I am female traveling alone so I don't want to be on the train late at night. I was going to go spend the morning in Salerno but decided to switch to get me back to Salerno in time to have my pick of trains back.

I am starting in Sorrento and chose Saturday over other days because the Circumvesuiviana line runs earlier.

6:25 am CV train, get off at Pompeii Scavi (Circumvesuviana line 30 min) 3€
Walk 20 min to reach Pompeii Station to get train (7:48, 8:29) to Paestum with line quick change in Salerno (90 min, 5€) (buy return ticket in Salerno, Paestum is an unmanned/no machine station)
9:15 am Ten minute walk to the ruins from the train station
11:30 am Walk to the beach is about 30 min, get some lunch and snacks on the way
2:00 pm Start walking back to train station
3:00 pm Train back to Salerno
3:30 pm Walk or take taxi to Duomo, free
Detour to see aqueducts?
Garden of Minerva €3 (open 4-8)
Walk back crossing through Villa Comunale and along Lungomare (waterfront)
Walk through Centro Storico to Duomo-Via Vernieri Station (6:44 w/x-fer and 7:28pm)
Last train from Duomo Station is 7:28 pm then not again until 10pm
Should be able to get 8:17 or 8:47 CV line back to Sorrento

Hope this helps. Of course, you can skip the time in Salerno and spend more time at the ruins or the beach. I figured even if things go bad (which they never do because I plan the hell out of my trips) I can always take a taxi or hitch which is easier from Salerno vs Paestum. I highly suggest you "take a walk" via Google Streetview from Pompeii Scavi station (ruins) to Pompeii Station (edit: Valle) (TVG line) it will keep you from making mistakes like taking the right fork in the road instead of the left. (edit: Torre Annuziata station is also a larger station with a TVG lint but it doesn't serve Salerno or Pompeii so make you walk south-east along Strada Stalale 18 past all the camp grounds).

Mandy, we are going to there around the same time(11/10/16 thru 15/10/16). We may have a tour booked from Sorrento but if it falls through we will rent a car. I figure it is a 2 hour car ride minimum. We will probably go earlier in the week. Have little interest in Salerno. Want to spend most of the time at the ruins in Paestum. If you are interested in hitching ride contact me. Would save a lot of the hassle as your itinerary a tests to :-))

To correct Mandy...'s info, Paestum DOES have a ticket machine which takes cash and credit cards. I used it a month ago. There is a tourist info office upstairs inside the station building. The ticket machine is outside the waiting room, next to the tracks. Validate your ticket.

Since you have decided to rent a car, there is ample parking at the archeological zone - along the street if you get there early, and several lots as well.

Allow time in Paestum to visit the ruins and the excellent museum (4 hours minimum for both).
