taxis in Piemonte?

Does anyone have experience taxing taxis in Piemonte? How easy is it? We're arriving by train and staying in Alba and won't have a car. We're staying two full days. We're a family of 5 and the tour companies we've contacted either are not available on the day(s) we need or else they quote a per-person rate that gets pretty steep when you have 5 people in a family.

So we'd like explore taking taxis - either calling one when we're finished at one venue and needing to get to the next or hiring a taxi for a chuck of the day to be available to take us to the nest spot. Thinking of visiting 1-2 vineyards that we arrange on our own and having lunch in a different small town and walking around it for a while, and then on to the next vineyard or to a pretty town to walk around or else back to the hotel in Alba.

Anyone have experience using taxis like this in Piemonte? Is it realistic to think we can easily call for taxis?

Try and Google ALBA NOLEGGIO CON CONDUCENTE or also ALBA N.C.C.

You should get several hits on the internet from local NCC companies.

NCC is the official legal designation for licensed private (limo like) drivers that perform services like transfers and tours.

The legal difference between Taxi and NCC, is that NCC must be booked in advance for an agreed pre established price (not by the meter), and must be based at a base (HQ or garage) from which they depart to perform their pre-booked service, in other words they cannot wait for random clients in the streets, like taxicabs can and do at taxi stands. They must be booked in advance.

I am not familiar with Alba, but generally regular taxi service (rather than pre-booked NCC) may not be available in smaller towns, and therefore you should not expect to necessarily see taxicabs lined up at the station taxi stand like you would see in larger cities like Turin, for example.

Alba is not a very big city, more like a central hub for a lot of small towns and farmers out in the hills. Also, most of the core is a ZTL. Taxis could be available, but I don’t know what level of service is available for the type of thing you’re looking for. Rideshares/TNCs or whatever they are in Italy might be available, but getting one back from a winery might be a long wait if it’s even possible.

When we went back in 2017, we had a rental car and stayed outside town at the Ada Nada agriturismo. Pretty chill place to drive, and a lot more freedom. Dunno if you can swing that, but it might make more sense.

Very excited for you, either way. Wife and I adored Alba, Asti, Bra, and the entire Langhe viticultural area. The food was amazing, the wines were fantastic. See about doing a tasting at Grinzane Cavour (sp?). They have wines from the entire region and it’s a cool site as well. A truly magical region, that put the idea of retiring there in another decade in my head.
