There are taxis in Orvieto and should be available at the train station. You can also take the fununcular across from the train station that takes you up the hill to the town where there are buses and taxis. Depending on the location of your hotel, once you are up the hill, you may be able to walk to your hotel. I believe RS Italy guide book describes this.

Ciao Donna. I studied and lived in Orvieto for several months and know the city very well. Unless you are arriving later than 8:30PM (the last of the funicular rides, running every 10 mins from the train station to Piazza Cahen), definitely use the funicular to get to the top of the station. I would not recommend taking the taxi unless absolutely necessary. Here is some information about the funicular: http://www.orvietoonline.com/funicolare_orvieto.html The funiculars coincide with the A & B mini buses that go from the Piazza to the city center. Let me know where your hotel is so that I can tell you which bus to take. The buses are great from getting from point A to B, and the drivers are excellent in manuvering their way through the piccola città. Or, if you don't mind a bit of an uphill walk (lovely in nice weather), you can go straight from the funicular station and walk up the Corso Cavour to the heart of the city. Buon Viaggio!

Donna, As the others have mentioned, it's usually not necessary to use a Taxi from the station to the town of Orvieto. The Funicular is by far the easiest and cheapest solution. Which Hotel are you staying in? You may be able to walk from the Funicular station, which terminates at Piazza Cahen. Happy travels!
