Taxis in Florence

There is a taxi stand down the street from the Accademia. Looking at Google Maps, if you make your way to the San Marco Piazza, you will find a bus stop & taxi stand. At 1900, you’ll have no issue getting a taxi

Are you trying to get to the airport or the train station by any chance? If so the T2 trolley stop San Marco University is just down the street from there in Piazza San Marco and will take you to the train station and then onto the airport.

That might an option depending on where you're going.

Hi, Giangilberto from Milan, so the biggest problem is the number of passengers in Florence, but in Italy in general, there are very few taxis (vans or minivans) capable of carrying eight people, so you need at least two.
Then I'll add two very clear rules: in Italy, it doesn't work like in the United States. Taxis aren't hailed on the street, either you book them from the official taxi company, in this case the one in Florence, or you go to designated taxi rank areas where you can take them without a reservation.
Returning to the hotel from the Duomo is easier than from Piazzale Michelangelo.
The best thing you can do is have them booked well in advance directly with the hotel, explicitly stating the number of people in your group.

Most cars accomodate five persons including the driver, very large cars six, more than that is already a van; even if they can take four passengers, do not expect they can take four passengers and four large pieces of luggage.

What is the street? I don't think there are streets that cannot accommodate any cars near the Accademia/Piazza San Marco, maybe there would be some very narrow alleys in the original center where Florence was founded by the Romans (basically between the Duomo and Piazza Signoria, near via Del Corso), but otherwise the Accademia area was gentrified and developed very recently (like in the 1700s/1800s, which is "very recently" in Florence), so streets are wide enough for cars (like more than 10 feet wide).

The segment of via Ricasoli between Piazza delle Belle Arti and Piazza San Marco (basically the street where the Accademia is) is totally pedestrianized and always crowded with people lined up to visit the Accademia, so it is possible that the taxi may not be able to drive there, in case your hotel is in that spot. However, if all you need to do is go to Piazzale Michelangelo, and your hotel is very close to Piazza San Marco, there are usually lots of taxicabs lined up at the taxi stand on Piazza San Marco, so walk there and jump on one (actually two), it will be cheaper than calling one from your hotel, since when you call one, the meter starts at the time of the call.

Hailing taxicabs while they are driving (like is common in NYC) is prohibited by law (taxicabs cannot stop for your in those circumstances). So you either go to the taxi stand like I said above, or call one (or have your hotel desk call one).
