Taxis from FCO to hotel in Rome

We have a family of 4, each with 1 baggage (carry-on size as suggested by Rick Steves for light travel). Rick Steves states that a fixed rate of 40 Euros for up to 4 peoples with bags from FCO to a Rome hotel. Is this a standard cost or do we need to negotiate for this price?

The 40 euro rate is for up to 4 people from the Fiumicino to the city center of Rome, including baggage. There are signs at the taxi stand listing the price. Be on the safe side and confirm the rate before you get in.

Always ask the price before getting in. We thought we'd save money taking the train into the city and then a cab. We forgot to ask the cab driver the cost from the train station and he overcharged us. We spent just as much as if we had the cab right from FCO. It never hurts to ask. Also our hotel had said they would book us van service from FCO to the hotel. You might want to check if you hotel can do that and what the price would be for all of you. It might be worth it if there are 4 of you, especially after your long trip from California.

Not only confirm the rate but have them write it down! It may seem like overkill but taxi drivers are scam artists. I confirmed the rate but he then charged us alot xtra for baggage and then insulted me again by palming the larger denomination euros to smaller ones then saying I did not give him enuf. Look out they are theives on jet lagged tourists! I will never forget it!!!

And if you are really interested is saving money, we found a city bus to the airport from Cornelia subway station (which was a block from our place in Rome) that cost us less than 4€ each.
