I read an NBC travel report stating that taxi drivers are scarce and Ubers are not allowed in Italy. I am staying in Siena and going to a cooking class 8 miles outside of town. Will we be able to get taxis or will this be at a very high rate? What are your experiences?
I recommend you arrange for transportation to/from your destination before going. Taxis might get you there, but if not pre-arranged, might not get you back. Does the cooking class instructor have recommendations?
True that Uber does not exist in Italy
Probably not at all true about lack of taxi drivers,
It’s one of the most lucrative careers in Italy
Do a Google search for taxi ranks in Siena then Google street view and you’ll likely see many taxis lined up.
Or just search outside the train station where you will see them all lined up
You must get your taxi at an official rank, no flagging down as you would in NYC.
Or have your lodging arrange one for you.
Charlym’s advice is spot on-arrange for the return trip as well.
There are several taxi apps that you can use -a search of this forum will bring them up
Not sure but an 8 mile trip I’d guess less than 20 euros? No tip expected or required.
ETA
Are you there for the Palio?
This post sounds like you will be

If so i would guess even more important to prearrange and confirm the cost beforehand
If you are staying in a hotel then it is quite possible to have your hotel to arrange transportation. We have even had AirBnB hosts assist us in finding drivers as well. Best of luck!
