Taxi pick up in Orvieto center to Train Station?

Dear Friends:
We will be staying in the wall city of Orvieto in an apartment and are taking a private car to Florence Train station at 6AM in the morning with luggage.

1) Can driver enter the city center to pick us up in the AM?
2) If not can a taxi enter the city for the short drive down the hill?
The Funicular is not running that early in the morning and we will need help with bags.
3) Can anyone recommend a reliable taxi service if we need one?

Thanks!

This question is a good example of the value of a guidebook. In Rick Steves' Italy Guide, he gives information on all forms of transportation in Orvieto and many other places in Italy.

According to Rick, the taxis can be ordered via telephone, 0763-301-903. Have your host call for you the night before. Usually they are more than happy to do this.

Help us help you. Please explain the reason behind the need to take a taxi to catch a train in Florence. Rather than taking a train from Orvieto to Florence. Or what am I missing?.

Seems to me you should ask the "private car' driver this question. Hard to believe he would not know.

I'd suggest contacting the "private car" service to find out if they have the necessary permits to allow pick up in the city. You didn't say where your apartment is located, but the PDF file attached to this website will explain the ZTL regulations for Orvieto - http://www.comune.orvieto.tr.it/pagine/z-t-l .

The easiest and simplest solution would be to use the solution that Laurel mentioned. Have your hosts prearrange a Taxi for the trip down the hill to the rail station. I'm sure local Taxi services will have the necessary permits. I've found that the car service drivers tend to be early, so being at the station early would be a good idea.

Thank you travel friends. We are choosing a private driver to make it too Florence early to catch a train on to Venice. If we took the first train at 7:15am from Orvieto to Venice via Florence to it gets into Florence much later and then limits our time in Venice.
I have contacted our driver to get more details. Ciao.
