Can 5 people (3 adults and two children ages 9 & 11) fit into a single taxi in Rome?
Probably but it will be tight.
With or without luggage or carry-ons? There are minivan taxis, just like the U.S., so that would be the best fit for you. Passengers front and back must be belted.
ps--Watch the meter! Rome taxi drivers are crooked. They will add to the meter when they think you are not looking or take you the "long way" to your destination. I even had one who was a quick-change artist.
Thanks for the helpful replies. In London, it is no problem to fit 5 people in a taxi, but this verifies what I vaguely recall--that most taxis in Rome are somewhat smaller. We would not have any luggage. Are the taxi vans available at normal taxi stands or would I need to call for one? We are just looking for an easy way to get around town; we would not be coming in from the airport. My memories of being completely squashed against other people on a bus in Rome make me hesitant to try the bus with children.
Thanks, everyone!
Sometimes you can get the bigger taxis at the stands but you must take the first car available so you may have to wait. I would suggest calling one when you need it.
Also, you might consider taking the metro. It is very easy to use and will get you close to most of the tourist sites in Rome.

Yes, you can, as long as it is the Fiat Multipla model of taxi. Those hold 6 people, 3 in the front, 3 in the back and lots of room for luggage. As ugly as those cars are, they are huge inside.
