Taxi from St Peters Square

Six of us (all over 50) will be arriving in late October 2024. We booked a early afternoon Vatican tour the day of our arrival. The tour company will pick us up from our centrally located hotel but does not drop off. So we will need to get back to our hotel from St Peters Square. I know we should probably just walk the 1.5 mile back but have a feeling some will be exhausted from the red eye flight and the vatican tour, or just worried we’ll get lost. Is it easy to get a taxi from St Peters Sq for six? Would it typically be expensive? The hotel recommended to find “Piazza Risorgimento” and there we would find a taxi. Also, any links to a good map would be helpful. Thanks for any feedback.

Type piazza Risorgimento, Rome into the Google Maps search bar. Looks like a 500 m walk from St Peters. Maybe a 10 minute stroll.

Walk a block or so from the Vatican, taxis will be cheaper. Carry the name and address of the hotel or where you are going to show the driver….makes it al go that much easier.

To note:
You cannot just flag down a taxi in Rome- or anywhere in Italy- you must go to an official taxi rank

Be sure you are using an official taxi- they are white. Do not go with anyone offering a taxi. Only board a taxi at a taxi rank.

All taxis are required by law to accept credit cards. You should confirm that their POS is "working" before you enter the taxi. Hold up your credit card for the driver to see and say "Carta?"

Tips are not required and are not necessary.

You don't say where your hotel is but anywhere in the historic center shouldn't be much more than 10 euros for a ride from St. Peter's.
You will need 2 taxis, unless you get lucky and there is a taxi van at the rank.

Apparently the exit area at St. Peter's is a well known taxi scam site.
Here is some info on how to be sure you are using official taxis there- scroll down to the blue box.

Important to know where your tour ends, as noted above.

From above link:

If you exit the Vatican Museums through the same door where you
entered, you will see a taxi stand there to your left.

If you are exiting St. Peter's Basilica, to find the closest taxi
stand, walk out of St. Peter's Square. Walk around the iron barriers,
hugging the colonnade. When you've almost come to the Swiss Guard,
take a left on via delle Fornaci. Walk along that street, taking the
little pedestrian underpass, and once you exit the underpass, you will
see the taxi stand on your left. It's less than a five minute walk
from St. Peter's Square.
