Taxi from Positano to Sorrento?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to see how much it would be to catch a taxi from Positano to Sorrento, just in case we have to wait long time for bus or ferry in July time. Is there a central point somewhere in Positano to do so or we have to make pre-booking? If pre-booking, any good cabi to recommend? Our group has 7 now, a friend of mine's family just joined us... So if there's mini-van to use, would be better, :-)

Our host here, Rick, mentions a specific company in Sorrento, but I didn't think they were the cheapest. I did see that they had mini-vans, I don't know about 7-passengers with LUGGAGE. I would expect the price to be around 110 Euros for a 3-passenger sedan. (Note that they are likely to have to return EMPTY.)

In our situation (Sorrento to Positano, with an 8-hour "touring" booking) we chose to use our Sorrento hotel's "partner" company. I figured that they would have a big incentive to have happy customers, whether or not they get a nice cut of the fee! Because that company is in Sorrento, I don't know if it's right for you. We were also able to charge the rental to our hotel bill. We got a newish Mercedes sedan with great air conditioning. Eurotravel, Via degli Aranci, 9 Sorrento +39 0818075895 . We also used them for our one-way transfer Sorrento-Naples Rail Station, which was 95 Euros.

Note that the car service uses the same TWO-lane road that the busses do. Summer traffic will affect the limo once you get into it! Just saying ... I believe that an advance booking will be the same or cheaper than a hailed-taxi. Taxis in Sorrento were very expensive, and Sorrento has many more streets and vehicles than Positano, as well as a lower price profile for tourism.

You can surly choose a comfortable and private transfer if you like, and your hotel can arrange it, or you can. 7 people will cost you!

However it will not be faster than the bus you will be stuck behind the bus paying more money! I took bus from Positano to Sorrento ( train to Naples) in ferry off season, you can see better from up high! Try to get a seat on the driver's side going north.

Exactly. The taxi will be stuck behind the same traffic that the bus will be stuck behind.

We used a transfer called Simply Amalfi from Naples to Positano and they were reliable, pleasant and reasonable. The charge was 110euros for two. They picked us up in a van, even though there were only two of us, so they could accommodate your group. They will pick you up either in front of your hotel or at the closest point to the road if you are renting an apartment. I also found them to be very responsive which was not the case with some services mentioned in the Rick Steves guidebook.

Thank you all, Tim, JJ-nowVoyager, Kim, stmurray2, for your very useful feedback. Could I please ask again, would ferry be a better choice in terms of land traffic issues in July?

Yes, unless it's very early. I would choose the ferry. Beautiful ride and will be faster.

The ferry from Positano to Sorrento will take an hour.
The bus, with no traffic is also "projected" 1 hr. Last September, end of high season, that hour turned into 2 1/2. The roads were packed and at a standstill.

Ferry and bus schedule.
