Specifically, are any of the white or yellow taxis large enough (minivans?) to handle 4 people with 4 large suitcases? I am familiar with the possibility of getting a limo/shuttle, so I do not need that information. Since there are 2 couples flying in on different flights scheduled an hour apart, the margin of error for one being late is greater resulting in extra charges for the limo/shuttle service.
Our hotel got us a taxi for 4 with luggage and there was plenty of room.I think if you go to a taxi stand you can find one.
Al,
It would be a lot easier (and cheaper) to take the train that goes right into the Termini Metro Station (main)--it is past the luggage claim and across the street (there are a lot of signs to help direct you) It is 11 euros and has a routine schedule. I know you have a group (with large suitcases), but it is also nice to see the rest of the city through train. Hope that helps!
I agree with Scott, and would take the train.
A taxi from the airport is cheaper than the train for 4 people. Taxis have a fixed rate of up to 4 people to the city center of 40 euro. The train is 44 euro for all 4 people and then there is the added expense of transport from Termini to the hotel.
I have witnessed the larger taxis jumping to the front of the line if the lead taxi is too small to hold all the people at the front of the queue.
In those white Fiat Multipla taxis that you see you can very comfortably hold six people, so four with luggage won't be a problem.
I just booked a shuttle from the airport to our hotel for 35 euro. Only a single traveller or a couple would get to the city cheaper by train.
What is the name of the Shuttle company & how many people? An earlier response of taking a Fiat Multipla type taxi still seems the best deal. Always open to new ideas. Downside is 2 couples coming on different flights & potential for one flight being very late, thus extra wait time charges by shuttle/limo company. The fall back is each couple takes their own cab downtown which is cheaper than the limo & wait time.
What I feel people forget is when traveling by public transportation, 2 large suitcases & 2 carryon bags are not the easiest things to throw around at will. Traveling overseas, each suitcase is near the 50 pound limit & each carryon is in the 20 pound range.
Also, do not forget once you arrive at Termini, you still schelp the luggage to the subway or to a cab for your final destination. From a cost standpoint even for 2 people, it's not worth it.
Al,
check out www.romeshuttlelimousine.com
They have different vehicles for different sized groups. Up to 4 people with "normal" luggage it's 35 Euro, a bit more for larger groups.
The shuttle companies do check for posted delays and won't charge extra for them. However, if you miss a connection you need to contact them or they will charge you extra.
Al,
Another option is www.romashuttle.com . I've used these folks often to book trips in from the airport for visitors!
A "friend of a friend who knows a friend" (Isn't that the Italian way?) set me up with Alfredo at this service and he has always been great! The prices are competitive with what you've read here. Often times I'll meet my party at FCO and Alfredo lets me ride back into town for free.
I agree with you about public transportation from the Airport. We do it only when we're traveling "in-Europe" as we will not carry much luggage. But if we're headed back from the States, laden down with supplies, we always use a service or a taxi.
If it's your first time to Rome, I also recommend a service or taxi. You're tired, jet-lagged, etc. Just pay the extra money to have someone take you directly to your hotel/apt. Write down your hotel/apt address as "our Italian" can often be misinterpreted by taxi drivers! Good Luck!
Ciao!
Ron
Ask your hotel what they would charge for limo service from train to hotel. I emailed our hotel and they quoted a price I thought was too high. We took the train and then a taxi from the train station to our hotel (hotel was not in walking distance). We didn't ask the taxi what the cost was to the hotel. We landed up paying nearly the same price as the hotel's limo service last Sept.
Shuttle service is the way to go. Do look at the 2 that have been suggested and email them ahead of time with questions.
I used a shuttle in November and it was a great way to go. The driver met us just outside international baggage claim with our name on a sign, took us right to the car and to our hotel...even pointing out the sights on the way! he loved to share his Rome with us.
We even arranged for the same service to take us back to the airport. The driver was on time at the hotel and was so concerned about getting us to the terminal early.
Don't mess with a taxi. the cost of a shuttle = peace of mind when you are jet lagged.
Try Terravision.eu. We used them everytime we visit Italy.
