The 40E flat fare has bee upped to 48 since (I think) June 1st.

The new taxi fares have mostly been rolled out now, though just a day or two ago I took one (from an official taxi stand) that still operated under the old fee schedule.

Thanks.

This is just one of the reasons I love this site. Planning a trip to Italy with my sister, doing my research like a good traveler and the 2012 RS Rome book says 40 Euros (60 for non Rome based taxis) FCO to central area hotels. Without this I would be wondering if I'd been had. We travel light but after a overnight long haul those of us who are on the wrong side of 60 will take the easy way out if reasonable. Leonardo Express times two is 30 Euros, plus another 8 or so from Termini to the hotel with much walking. Have always taken the Express before but now...that's my left knee you hear creaking.

WRT tipping taxi drivers, I do like the Italians do. I only tip if they've done something extraordinary, for example being really friendly and chatty in Italian so I get a chance to practice my Italian. It happens. And even then, I only round up the bill by a little. Maybe 5%.

I paid 45 euros from FCO to the Hotel Sonya at the end of May. Totally slammed the "unofficial" cab driver who approached offering a ride. When he answered 75 euros to my "quante, per favore". I said "No, 45". We exchanged a couple of more times, politely, and he finally walked away and we found the line of city cabs. My kids said, "what just happened?". I explained that thanks to all the research done prior to the trip, we were off to a great start. The next two weeks were fantastic! Can't wait to go back. Thanks again to all the people who post here.
